Our Help and Support Service

Once you're up and running with your new site we'll be encouraging you to start making your investment work for you.

We'll be sending you a series of articles covering how to keep your site content up-to-date, the basics of Search Engine Optimisation and maintenance articles for your your online shop.  Our aim is to keep you firmly in charge of your content and confident that you can use your site to support your business.

For our hosted customers we will also enable free access to our extensive library of Frequently Asked Questions.  Here you'll find helpful, plain english articles to help you through most common tasks.  We have tried to make sure that these articles are written from your perspective, without technotalk jargon and clear (hopefully) pictures at each stage to guide you along the way.

Here's an example where we describe how to insert a picture into an article:

Inserting Pictures into your Article

Select the 'Insert/Edit Image' tool from the editor toolbar, this will pop up the Image Manager screen, we'll take you through the main functions of this tool.

imagemanager001Finding your Pictures

Look at the bottom left-hand side of the Image Manager you will find the 'Folders' section. Here you will find all the folders that contain pictures that you can use on your site.

You will probably upload and use hundred's if not thousands of pictures on your website so it's worth spending a little time organising how you will store them to make them easily accessible in the future.

imageMgr003Adding a New Folder using Image Manager

On the right-hand side of the Image Manager click on the 'New Folder' icon.

imageMgr004This opens the 'New Folder' dialog box. Enter the name of your new folder (no spaces between the words - use an underscore if you need to have two words) and click 'OK'.

imageMgr005Now you can see your new folder in the folder list and in the file list. Note: to put files in the new folder you will need to left-click on your folder icon in the folder list.

imageMgr006Uploading pictures to Your New Folder

On the right hand side of the Image Manager, next to the 'New Folder' icon, is the 'Upload' icon. Click on this icon and you will launch the 'Upload' dialog box.

imageMgr007In the Browse section of the upload dialog box use the 'Add' button to Browse your hard drive and select pictures that you want to add to the Upload queue. You have to choose files one at a time but you can add several files in one go. So find all the pictures that you want to use.

imageMgr008When you have added all your files to the queue your Queue screen will look something like this. At this stage each file has a cross by it indicating that it hasn't been uploaded yet. If you wish you can rename the files at this point, (there must be no spaces in their names,) by clicking on the 'Rename' icon to the left of the red cross.

Once you are happy with the files you have selected, and their names, click the 'Upload' button. As the files are successfully uploaded, the red crosses will change to white ticks on a green background. Click the 'Dialog Close' cross in the top right hand corner of the Upload dialog box. You are now ready to insert the pictures into your Article.

Click on the file that you want to insert and you will note that some of the 'Properties' details have been completed as shown here.

In this FAQ we are only going to concern ourselves with the effects of this 'Image' tab, the Rollover and Advanced tabs will be covered in another FAQ. Going through each box in turn.

URL - this will be automatically filled in by the programme - do not try to change this.

Alternate Text - this is the description of pictures used by visually impaired visitors to your web site who use assistive technology such as screen readers, the 'alt text' should therefore describe what the picture portrays. This is also the text that shows up when you hold your curser over the picture on your site.

Dimensions - you can elect to change the size of the picture by entering new values in one or other of these boxes. Leaving the 'Proportional' tick box selected will ensure that you do not distort the picture by changing its size.

Alignment - the alignment setting dictates where the picture will sit on the page and how the text will behave around it. Experiment with different settings to obtain the effect you want - you can see what effect you are having by looking at the 'Preview' section of the Image Manager.

Margin - these boxes specify the amount of clear space that you want to have around your picture. If you wish to set different values in the various boxes then unselect the 'Equal Values' tick box.

Border - if you wish you can add a border of varying thickness, style and colour by setting the values in these drop down boxes and the colour picker.

If you do not currently have access to our FAQs then please call us so that we can make suitable arrangements for you.
